The polymer obtained by the reaction of melamine and formaldehyde is also called melamine formaldehyde resin, melamine resin, and the English abbreviation MF. A cross-linking reaction occurs during processing and molding, and the product is an insoluble and infusible thermosetting resin. It is customary to collectively refer to it and urinary aldehyde resin as amino resin. Melamine formaldehyde resin has many uses and can be used as ceramic and cement dispersants, wood adhesives, fabric printing and dyeing finishing agents, water treatment agents, etc.
MF resins have the advantages of simple synthesis, fast curing, strong adhesion, light color, scratch resistance, and high temperature resistance, and occupy a major share of adhesives for impregnated film paper. The special structure of melamine brings superior performance of the resin, but also leads to the resin stability, short storage period and poor fluidity and other shortcomings, which in turn brings defects to the impregnated film paper, such as impregnated film paper brittle, easy to crack, not easy to store and so on. Therefore, pure MF resin is rarely used directly for impregnation, and must be modified.
Used as ceramic and cement dispersant:
Melamine resin sulfonate is a good anionic surfactant and is often used as a dispersant or water-reducing agent in ceramics, cement, and concrete at home and abroad. The current research hotspots in this field lie in two aspects, one is cost reduction. Since the price of melamine resin water-reducing agent is more expensive than that of naphthalene-based water-reducing agent, and it is often supplied in the form of liquid with lower concentration, its application is subject to certain restrictions. The main solution is to use other cheap active parts (such as urea) instead of melamine monomer, and add calcium sugar and sodium gluconate admixtures to the melamine resin water-reducing agent to form a water-reducing agent, or make a melamine resin water-reducing agent with a high solid content; the second is to explore the appropriate relative molecular weight of the melamine resin water-reducing agent and ensure the stability of the viscosity over a long period of time.
Used as wood adhesive:
Because melamine formaldehyde resin has great chemical activity, when it penetrates wood products, it cross-links and hardens quickly. Without the need of other hardeners, it can be thermally hardened or hardened at room temperature, thereby producing bonding. Due to its good thermal stability, water resistance, and chemical resistance, it is widely used in artificial boards, wood, construction, paper packaging and other fields. The focus in this field is how to overcome the cracking phenomenon and obtain melamine formaldehyde resin with moderate flexibility. The current solution is to add polyvinyl alcohol, because it can react with formaldehyde to form polyvinyl formal, which is evenly distributed in the resin to prevent the triazole heterocyclic molecules in the MF resin molecules from approaching, thereby toughening and cracking.
Used as fabric printing and dyeing finishing agent:
In the textile industry, melamine formaldehyde resin and its derivatives are important raw materials for preparing fabric printing and dyeing finishing agents. Its main mechanism is that it can be used as a surface modifier and coupling agent for fabrics, thereby improving the anti-shrinkage, anti-wrinkle, and washability properties of cotton fabrics. However, due to poor storage stability, rough fabric feels and easy absorption of chlorine and yellowing, there are more and more studies on its modification. Currently, melamine resin is etherified with methanol, and formaldehyde modifiers such as cyclovinylidene urea and borax are added to obtain a modified melamine formaldehyde resin finishing agent with high aldehyde stability.
Used as molding compounds and laminating resins:
In the molding compound industry, melamine resin molding compound has a wide range of colors, excellent electrical insulation, flame retardancy, high temperature resistance, pollution resistance, water resistance, and hygienic properties. Adding fillers, colorants, curing agents, plasticizers, etc. can produce high-strength plastics, fiber-reinforced materials, and laminated materials, which are widely used in the preparation of tableware, electrical devices, daily necessities, etc.
Used as water treatment agent:
In the water treatment industry, modified melamine formaldehyde resin is mainly used as a flocculant for wastewater treatment. MF resin has strong resistance and is ionic after modification. By changing the synthesis conditions, the product’s degree of polymerization, relative molecular mass, particle characteristics, etc. are controlled, so that it has good water solubility, charge neutralization, adsorption bridging, and surface adsorption. It destroys the stability of suspended colloidal particles in wastewater, promotes mutual collision, increases particle volume, accelerates sedimentation, and achieves flocculation.

Other applications:
The polycondensation reaction between melamine formaldehyde resin and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide forms a cross-linked product with a network structure. It has good elasticity, compressive strength, excellent thermal stability, and water resistance, and is used as a water blocking agent in oil field chemicals.
MFR Features
Melamine formaldehyde resin is a melamine formaldehyde resin that has been etherified with methanol. Its main use is as an additive for the papermaking and textile industries. When used as a paper wet strength agent, it gives the paper an ideal wet strength, which is better than the commonly used wet strength agents in the past, such as trimethyl melamine, etc., and it has the following advantages:
(1) Extremely low free aldehydes;
(2) Made into high-solid products for easy storage and transportation;
(3) It can be miscible with water in any proportion and is very convenient to use;
- Under slightly acidic conditions, a cationic system can be formed and is slightly corrosive.
When used as a textile auxiliary, this product is compatible with most textile chemicals and is widely used in the textile printing and dyeing industry. Especially when used as a cross-linking agent for polyacrylate, it can effectively improve the wear resistance, water resistance and color fastness of polyacrylate.
